What Happened

David Sacks used ChatGPT to co-write a blog post, highlighting its utility in speeding up ideation, research, and editing processes. OpenAI's ChatGPT reached a milestone as the fastest-growing application, amassing over 100 million users in just two months. The introduction of plugins is positioned as a pivotal moment for developers, analogous to the launch of the iPhone and its app store.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT plugins that allow integration with services like Instacart, OpenTable, and Shopify, expanding its functionality and overcoming outdated content limitations. ChatGPT now includes a browsing capability, enabling it to access and provide real-time information, a significant leap forward from its 2021 training data.

Chamath Palihapitiya stressed the need for unique data sets, such as those from Reddit and Stack Overflow, to train AI models effectively. He suggested that without unique data, AI models will eventually converge, losing their competitive edge. The potential for AI to disrupt search and commerce is significant, with ChatGPT integrating transaction capabilities.

Google's Bard, while 80% as capable as ChatGPT, benefits from Google's extensive platform reach, including YouTube, Chrome, and Android, providing a substantial distribution advantage. Despite Google's resources, regulatory scrutiny and internal management challenges may hinder its AI innovation speed. OpenAI, however, maintains a lead with its proactive development cycles.

The RESTRICT Act, proposed by Senator Mark Warner, poses a significant threat to the open Internet and privacy by potentially imposing harsh penalties for using banned software via VPNs. Critics argue that it resembles China's controlled Internet, granting excessive power to the U.S. security apparatus. The bill's vague language could lead to broad interpretations, creating legal uncertainties for users.

Notable figures like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak have expressed concerns about rapid AI development, advocating for a pause in experiments to address risks such as job automation and loss of control over civilization. The analogy of CRISPR Cas9 emphasizes AI's uncontrollable nature and potential societal impacts. Meanwhile, the AI boom is fostering innovation, with a significant portion of new startups focusing on AI technologies.
